Signs of ADHD in children: what parents often notice first

Many parents picture ADHD as a child who can't sit still. That's sometimes true, but ADHD often looks quieter, especially in girls and in bright children who find ways to cope.

Common signs at home and school

  • Starting tasks but rarely finishing them
  • Losing things often: homework, jackets, water bottles
  • Daydreaming or seeming not to listen
  • Big emotional reactions that fade as fast as they came
  • Homework that takes far longer than it should
  • Being called "careless" despite clearly trying

When to consider an evaluation

If these patterns show up in more than one place (at home and at school) and have lasted at least six months, an evaluation can help. A good ADHD assessment also checks for things that can look like ADHD, such as anxiety, learning differences, or sleep problems.
