Schools often use a tiered system, sometimes called MTSS or RTI, to give students the right amount of support. Knowing how it works can help you advocate for your child.
The three tiers
- Tier 1: High-quality teaching and support for every student in the classroom
- Tier 2: Small-group help for students who need a bit more
- Tier 3: Intensive, individual support, often with a formal assessment
Where an assessment fits
A full psychoeducational assessment is most helpful when a child isn't responding to support, or when there are signs of a learning disability, ADHD, autism, or emotional needs. You have the right to request an assessment from your school at any time. You don't have to wait for every tier to be tried first.
I'm happy to help you work out which step makes sense for your child.
